(Thanks to Assako Holyoke and Timothy Kenny for permission to post this notice.)

    Dear MCMLA Members:

The MCMLA 2014 annual meeting will be a joint meeting with four other MLA Chapters: the Medical Library Group of Southern California & Arizona (MLGSCA), the Northern California & Nevada Medical Library Group (NCNMLG), the Pacific Northwest Chapter of MLA (PNCMLA), and the South Central Chapter of MLA (SCCMLA).

Here is the opportunity for you to share with a larger audience your new research, your new project, your library’s new services, and your new ideas.

The MCMLA Research Committee would like to invite you to start planning for those papers and posters as the annual meeting Planning Committee may soon start calling for submissions. So, don’t get caught by surprise and think ahead!

The MCMLA ‘14 annual meeting will be held in Denver, Colorado.

    Cheers,

    MCMLA Research Committee

The MCMLA 2015 Virtual Meeting planning committee is seeking volunteers from the MCMLA membership to serve on committees for the meeting. Being a virtual meeting, committee tasks will be altered and some committees that existed for the face-to-face meetings will not be necessary.

Established committees include Program and CE, which will be the responsibilities of the Research and Education Committees, respectively.

The two committees that seek members are Registration/Website and Technology. The Registration/Website committee will be responsible for coordinating online registrations, which includes the registration process, handling of fees, and communication of meeting codes and URLs. Additionally, this committee will coordinate with the other committees for content to be included on the website. The Technology committee will be in charge of selecting an online platform for the meeting, running tests, coordinating troubleshooting, and facilitating the meeting in the online environment from a technological standpoint.

Please consider volunteering for one of these two committees and be a part of the next era of annual meetings!

Email your interest or questions to Heather Brown hlbrown@unmc.edu by March 1, 2014.

That's the question asked by Salary.com at http://www.salary.com/12-jobs-on-the-brink-will-they-evolve-or-go-extinct/slide/2/  They looked at 12 jobs to see if they had evolved or become extinct with the changes in technology.

    Verdict: Evolved.

Other jobs evaluated: professional typists, video store clerk, umps and refs, icemen (really, have any of us every seen an iceman?), travel agents, newpaper deliverer, family farmer, switchboard operator, supermarket cashier, postal worker, on-air DJ.

The Medical Library Association Eugene Garfield Research Fellowship promotes and supports research in the history of information science. The $5000 fellowship, established in 2013, is to be used for research-related purposes regarding the history of information science to increase the underlying knowledgebase in this area and enhance the current and future practice of the information professions, particularly health sciences librarianship.  Health sciences librarians and information scientists, health professionals, researchers, educators, and administrators are eligible. Applicants must have a master's or doctor's degree or be enrolled in a program leading to such a degree and demonstrate a commitment to the health sciences. The fellowship is not designed to support research for a doctoral dissertation or master’s thesis.

The award is not restricted to disbursement in a single year and funding may be disbursed over a period of up to two years depending on the needs of the research fellow. The award may be used to supplement or extend other awards, including other private or government-supported fellowships, but is not contingent on receiving other awards.  Please see the MLA Grants and Scholarships page  (http://www.mlanet.org/awards/grants/)  on MLANET for more information. The submission deadline is December 1.

Do you really need fresh sheets and towels every day?  Probably not. During your stay at the University Guest House, make use of their “You Choose – Wash or Reuse” program to ensure only soiled linens are sent out for cleaning.  Linen & Towel Reuse Programs makes a large impact, saving 6,000 gallons of water and 40 gallons of detergent per 150 room hotel every month.

Use refillable containers to stay hydrated throughout the meeting rather than purchasing bottled water. A reusable bottle will be provided to you at registration courtesy of our conference sponsors!  There will be water filling stations throughout the Conference Center… and Salt Lake City’s water has been voted best-tasting in the nation.  Give it a try!

If you like to tote things around during the conference, please bring a bag from home.  We will NOT be distributing a MCMLA conference tote bag.

Tuesday morning’s General Session will focus on reimagining and revitalizing our libraries’ physical spaces. In preparation, we are offering a tour of the award-winning Frederick Albert Sutton Building. Home of the Department of Geology & Geophysics at the University of Utah, this innovative facility features state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, and offices that foster collaboration and innovative research.  The building’s distinctive architectural design and educational display areas provide a magnificent showcase for discoveries in the fields of geology and geophysics, and highlight the many contributions of University of Utah faculty and alumni to these fields. Don’t miss your chance for a guided tour of this inspirational space.

Consider taking the light rail from the Salt Lake airport to the University Guest House Conference Center. Riders can board at the Welcome Center just outside Terminal One. Fare is $2.50 and trains run every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends. Get on the Airport TRAX (Green line) to downtown Salt Lake City, and transfer to the University (Red line).  Get off at the "Fort Douglas" stop on the University of Utah campus, and proceed up the elevator, across the Legacy Bridge, and to the University Guest House and Conference Center.  Cheap, easy, and good for the environment!
