Finding and Using Health Statistics on the Web

Class Description:
In this 90-minute webinar you will learn the difference between data and statistics, key features and use of health statistics, steps to finding health statistics, and sources of health statistics at the local, state and national level. The importance and relevance of health statistics in various contexts will be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to become familiar with the features and scope of several statistics resources through the use of examples. The session will include demos of National Center for Health Statistics, The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, State Health Facts, County Health Rankings, City Health Dashboard, and RHIHub.
Carolann Curry, MLIS is the Outreach & Data Coordinator for Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), Region 5. Collaborating with other NNLM regions and centers, Carolann develops and delivers both in-person and online workshops aimed at increasing awareness and utilization of NLM and NIH resources within the research and academic communities. Her instruction includes PubMed searching, open access policy compliance, and research data management.
Katie Pierce Farrier is the Data Science Strategist for the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), Region 3. They are responsible for collecting, analyzing, and sharing data about the engagement and outreach impact of their regional office. Katie currently teaches courses on data science, open data, and health literacy. Their research interests include telehealth, mentoring LIS students and early career librarians, and promoting open data practices.
